The Big Read – Year 7 Transition

when-secrets-set-sail_cover

We know that reading for pleasure is a key to success in secondary school. It helps pupils progress in all of their subjects and it also supports their wellbeing. To help the new Year 7s get off to a good start, we are asking students to take part in Chessington School’s Big Read over the summer.

We are asking that all new Year 7 students read When Secrets Set Sail by Sita Brahmachari. Students will receive questions and an activities pack, relating to the book to complete before school starts. You will also be able to access additional copies of the questions and activity pack on the school website. Copies of the book are available through ebooks.com, Amazon, Google Play, as well as directly through the Hachette UK website. You may also find copies of the book in your local library.

Please can you encourage and support your child with reading the book and completing the activities? They are designed to be fun and involve some writing, drawing and model making. We will be talking to pupils in September, as well as in Summer School, about what they have done and look forward to seeing some of the results of their creative activities. Talk to your child about the book and if possible, read it along with them so that you can discuss it.
We are also looking forward to attending the online virtual Q&A session on the 17th of September with the author. During this session, students will get the opportunity to speak directly to the author and listen to how she was inspired to write her novel.

A museum and a library are key locations in the book – if your local library has re-opened, please encourage your child to visit and make use of it. Trips to local museums and places of interest are also really useful in supporting children to learn about their local area and the world around them. By encouraging them to get to know their way around you will be building their independence. This helps them feel more confident about starting a new school.

We look forward to discussing the book together in September.
Thank you for your support.

Kind regards,
Mrs. Brittany Chedda
