Chessington School sports

The aims of our Physical Education curriculum and beyond are to include all students and to promote positive attitudes to healthy living and sport. Our core sports are football, basketball, netball, rugby, cricket and athletics.

Chessington’s sporting achievements will be recognised annually at a celebration awards dinner. Each year we will invite high achieving sports personalities as guest speakers.

We want the sport at Chessington to teach lessons of resilience, determination and healthy competition. We also want our students to fully participate as we firmly believe that sport changes lives.

Lower school

During lower school students will develop through rigorous assessments driven around allowing our students to progress. Students are assessed both physically and cognitively and provided with a broad, balanced curriculum that will enable them to experience a diverse range of sports and activities centred on developing them as happy, healthy and fit members of the school community. These sports range from traditional sports including Football, Basketball, Athletics and Cricket to alternative sports such as: Ultimate Frisbee, Boxing, Tchoukball and Baseball. The school aims to instill a passion for sport that will be life long and endeavours to instil a belief that sport is for all.

Students learn through themes that are delivered in rotation every half term.

  • This theme lends itself perfectly to a sports analysis concept where students for example could focus of successful number of passes in a game and them formulate strategies as to how this can be improved (linking their knowledge of previous themes of learning covered)
  • This theme of learning could be taught closely alongside skill development with key concepts from accurate replication being built upon

  • Students will really develop their cognitive skills in this theme which should in turn inform their technical selection and application. Students will be encouraged to think both independently or as part of a team
  • Students reflecting on the process not just the outcome of their decision making when solving problems should form a large part of the lesson structure
  • Students at the advanced stage of their development in this theme should be able to draw on pervious experiences of problem solving and translate that knowledge across a variety of different activities. This theme could be taught through most activities and would be brilliant to incorporate some of the GCSE content into lessons.
