Dear Parents & Carers
Re: Calculator in Mathematics lessons
I am writing to advise you that from September it will be compulsory for your son/daughter to bring a scientific calculator to every maths lesson.
Over the last few years, there have been a number of significant changes to the maths curriculum at both Key Stage 3 and GCSE level. Therefore it is imperative for students to become familiar with their own calculators during lessons so that when they come to take their GCSE exams they are confident with how to use them correctly and all the different functions. We strongly believe this will lead to better results for our students.
The calculators that are most commonly used are the Casio fx-83GTX, the Casio fx-85GTX, or the Casio fx-83GT Plus which come in a range of colours. These calculators have all the functions required to be able to complete both the foundation and higher GCSE exams to a high standard, and are the same as the students will be used to using in school. These calculators can be purchased both online and in stores for approximately £12, however often stationery shops and supermarkets give good discounts with ‘back to school’ deals in the summer holidays. If you have any financial difficulty with purchasing this equipment please contact the school for assistance.
Please ensure you son/daughter is fully equipped for their maths lessons for the new term, with their name clearly marked on their calculator.
If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me.
